What Are TEF Canada and TCF Canada?

TEF Canada and TCF Canada assess French proficiency in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Both are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry.

Administered by CCI Paris Île-de-France
France Éducation international

TEF Canada

TCF Canada

The Test d’évaluation de français is created by the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Its Canada version is strictly calibrated to evaluate language competencies required for immigration and citizenship.

The Test de connaissance du français is developed by France Éducation international on behalf of the French Ministry of National Education. The TCF Canada edition complies fully with Canadian government language benchmarks.

Crucial requirement: Both the TEF Canada and TCF Canada versions are accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for Express Entry and economic immigration. Always verify you register for the designated Canada edition rather than other variants.

— Structure & Timing

Side-by-Side Test Comparison

Both exams assess listening, reading, writing and speaking. Test scores are mapped to Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC), the French-language benchmarks used for immigration.

/ Decision Strategy

Key Decision Factors

Which Exam Should You Choose?

• Task format: Do you prefer TEF's 2 longer writing tasks or TCF's 3 shorter writing prompts?

Neither test is universally easier, and neither awards more immigration points at equivalent NCLC levels. Your choice should depend on personal comfort with specific test mechanics, exam seat availability, registration fees, and local test centre timelines.

• Oral interaction: TEF tests roleplay persuasion, while TCF features a progressive interview structure.

• Logistical dates: Local centres often offer distinct testing calendars and result turnaround windows.

We advise every candidate to attempt authentic sample tasks from both providers. Practicing real items quickly reveals which speaking and writing structures fit your natural communication style best.

Important note: For Express Entry, ensure you book TEF Canada or TCF Canada specifically, never a generic regional variant.

Reaching NCLC 7 or higher across reading, listening, writing, and speaking can qualify you for targeted French-language category-based selection rounds, if all other eligibility terms are met.

With NCLC 7+ in all four French skills, you may receive 50 additional CRS points with English CLB 5+ in all four skills, or 25 with English CLB 4 or below (or no English test).

Express Entry results must be less than two years old both when submitting your profile and when filing your permanent residence application. No test result guarantees an invitation or PR.

▸ Wider Opportunities

Beyond Immigration Goals

Specific TEF or TCF exam variants can also validate linguistic competency for academic study programs, professional licensing bodies, or employment requirements. Each institution establishes its own accepted test versions and qualifying score thresholds.

Preparing for TEF or TCF delivers benefits far beyond points calculations. Fluency creates meaningful career pathways in bilingual corporate and public sectors, deepens social ties in francophone communities, and boosts day-to-day conversational confidence across Canada.
